She first picked up a camera in 1982 when by a fluke she ended up in a college photography course. At first discouraged, she soon discovered that she had a knack for capturing sights that others overlooked. She was hooked. From there, she became a freelance photographer and feature article writer for various Philadelphia area newspapers and for the Valley Informer, a former Huntsville Alabama weekly newspaper. Not paying attention to the possiblilities, she put down her camera for many years before she realized that she came alive when behind the lens. She has since picked her cameras back up and has been living her life behind the lens, creating images that stick with you long after you've stopped looking at them. S. Marcella Smith has been photographing inner city life, and attending courses designed to perfect her craft, which she takes seriously.
